What is a inflammation of the middle-ear and what are the symptoms?
Inflammation of the middle ear is as it sounds, an inflammation of the middle ear what causes a lack of oriëntation and finally the rat shall die if there is no current treatment.
The symptoms are:
* loss of
balance
* falling with every movement and falling from heights
* walking in circles in the cage
* not knowing what is above and beneath
* refusing water and food
* sometimes loosing weight (probably a result of refusing food and water)
* a crooked head (not neccesary, but mostly this is de case)
All of these symptoms pointed to a inflammation of the middle ear and not to a bleeding of the brains. If a rat is turning around or is walking in circles, recovery of an inflammation of the middle ear is very minimal. Normaly the whole picture is characteristic for this disease, that is caused by a virus. Save yourselfe the unnecessary cost of a vet (that can be over hondreds of euros under extreme (!) circumstances) and ask your vet to give you Enrofloxoral to fight this virus. Certainly with something like Propolis or Beepolls (ONLY if your rats are used to eat this!!) it possibly makes a difference between life or dead from your rat(s). Even the strongest rats can die because of this virus, but usually it will kill the weak and elderly animals. This virus does have an incubationtime of three weeks. If you have (had) this virus in your house, it can be better not to make any contact with other ratowners during the same period, from the moment the last rat has had this virus.
I can not speak for a inflammation of the brain. That I have never seen. There is a dissease E. Cunucili that do have those symptomes. It is almost similar to SDA or SDAV (so it seems). I do not know enough about that.
